Where to place decking lights?

What is the best arrangement for LED deck lights?

My wife wants light on top of deck to highlight the edge but also some on the front to highlight the step.

What is the best way to place the lights, equal distance between each is what I had in mind but how to light the step?

I would have them facing horizontally on the "barge board" deck. The lights will still illuminate the edge and stop glare.

I will then just space them out evenly where possible.
