Where's my hot water going?

No if you have a trickle and you have wooden floors downstairs
you'll notice nothing. It will soak straight into the ground.

Stop cock in loft? Do you mean ball valve? The meter will go round if water is being drawn through it, as (I think) the tank is still filling slightly that would account for the water usage at the meter.

If tank is being refilled at a steady but constant rate, then that water is going somewhere. If no taps are on you have a leak! You dont need a shrink, just a good plumber. That leak needs locating and repairing, otherwise risk of damage to the house.

If the leak is on a hot supply pipe then the hot water is slowly being drained off over time, and replaced with cold, hence why you find the hot water runs out quickly.

Hi Hugh

I notice you live in Northamptonshire, you've got the job if you want it plus I've got a day's work in the bathroom (cash) if you are interested.

Send me a PM and we can arrange.

Cheers

Gary

Just did a little experiment.

Pushed the ball cock down to make sure the main header tank was full, then turned the isolator valve to off on the in-flow on the immersion heater. Left it for 1/2 hr. re-checked the ball cock, still nothing happening, turned on the valve on the immersion heater and gurgle gurgle the ball cock came on.

So where's the bloody water going!

You need to start tracing your hot water pipes, start from the pipe at the top of the hot water tank,

It will go to a tee, it will go up (vent pipe) then down or across. Follow this pipe and see where it goes. ( not up)

Keep the tank hot with the boiler.

Turn off the mains stopcock.

Dont use any water in the house.

Hot water leaking will keep the supplying pipe hot. See if you can find and pipes going downstairs which are hot.

An infra red thermometer used to scan the floor might indicate and area where the temperature is a little higher than the suroundings.

Tony
