I live in a 1930's semi with an attractive open arched porch with a wood and original lead glazing interior door and surround. It is absolutely freezing. We've put up with it now for two winters and I have put draught bead sponge around door frame to try to keep the worst out, but it really does not do much. It makes the whole house cold. So far I've resisted putting on external doors because it will spoil the look of the house, but the wife has now made me succumb to the practical. I'm looking for ideas to close off the porch in the most sympathetic manner.

Any help appreciated.

If you want to close off an open porch then I would suggest some sort of custom glazing units & an exterior front door but if you only have an interior grade door between that & the hall, it will still be cold & you need a better insulated door between that & the porch to make any real difference.

There are now minimum building regulations standards for doors & windows; porches are exempt from building regulations as long as you keep an exterior grade door between it & the hall & you don’t heat the porch, otherwise you will need to comply with building regulations for porch. So if you fit a porch, you may have to replace the interior grade door anyway & you would no longer be allowed to replace it ‘like for like’. If you install a new door, it must meet minimum insulation standards so you may need either a FENSA certificate or a certificate of compliance from your local council.

Yeah I know - thought I'd try waking them up on the off chance though. People like to talk about their experiences :)
