I'm going to replace a living room window with a nice big french type window but I don't know whether to go for the sliding patio type or the conventional door type.
Does anyone have any experience of doing this and can offer advice please?

Either way you will need building control to sign off.

I have found that cheap patio doors can be awkward/fiddly to close and lock no matter how well they are fitted (Wicks ones especially). Also the actual opening will end up being about 200mm less than half the width of the door frame.

Id recommend French doors assuming you have the space for them to open in or out.

Terminology wise, you are a little confused. You either opt for 'french' style or sliding style doors. Both could be deemed 'patio' doors.

Sliding doors take up less room.

French style can open in or out and will afford you almost full width opening.

I don't think one is any more secure than the other.

Large sliders can be a handful to open.
