Next year we are going for the big one - attic upgrade on 1930s terrace, as our old endowment policy is due!
Anyway we are looking for 4 major jobs :
Job 1 - floor needs strengthing - steel beams passed throuh the roof
Job 2- a velex window installed
Job 3 - roof needs retiling + and insultion of roof space
Job 4 - new staircase to loft

which order would you consider doing the jobs ?

knowing that the tiles would have to come off a couple of rows, to get the beams in , then job 1 first ?

To be honest 1, 2 , and 3 can all be done in conjunction at the same time. Only consider internal works like your staircase once the roof is watertight, although the insulation of the roof can be put off until the stairs are fitted.
