Which paint???

Some pretty basic advice please.

Purely for private diy domestic use what is the best emulsion paint to use. Should I buy the cheaper 'own brand' from the diy stores or should I buy Dulux or similar which seem to be about 40% more expensive?

Id give the home brand a wide berth...

Johnstones is a pretty good all round emulsion...very good matt.

I've used own brand paints lots of times and got good results, but I would say that it depends on the colour you are painting, plus the colour you are covering.
the branded paints generaly cover better and therefore need less coats, but if you are going for a darker colour over a light colour own brands can be just as good. same goes generaly for light upon light, but if u are covering a dark colour with light own brands will take more coats than branded paint so might not work out any cheaper.
