Whirlpool problems

Hello. First post here. You will normally find me in the UK electric forum getting angry or sometimes helping out.

I find you experts in appliances kind of masters of the black arts! I would rather keep to cable calculations and getting angry about part p

Anyway to celebrate the birth of my new daughter this morning my Whirlpool built-in under work top freezer has died .

Basically it is tripping the RCD out in about 1/2 second. I turned it off and changed the plug (as I never trust factory sealed plugs) then it went in about 4 seconds. I notice that the temperature setting that need a 5p to change has become stuck fast.

My question is. Do you think it can be repaired. Is this usual for whirlpool.

Megger the appliance from the plug and see if it's down live to earth, nuetral to earth or both.
You'll have to pull the machine out to get at the thermostat, it's under a cover on the top.
Open the cover and disconnect the earth from the stat and then megger the machine again at the plug (live to earth, nuetral to earth) and see if the fault has cleared. If it has then you'll need a new thermostat, if it hasn't then the fault is probably within the compressor itself.

Can I assume if its either of these it's worth repairing with regards to repair + labour v new machine.

Sorry if this is obvious question, but I really know nothing about white goods.

Freezer is 2 years old

Compressor and regas would be expensive. Upto £200ish depending on who does it. Thermostat is a much cheaper option although Whirlpool do charge a lot for their parts, a pattern spare part should be even cheaper.
