White staining on lower brickwork

Hi all,

I’ve noticed a white staining/build-up along the bottom course of bricks on the outside wall of my house and I’m trying to work out exactly what it is and the best way to deal with it.

For one thing, it's efflorescence season and another, it looks like those are sub-DPC (often wet) bricks. I have localised efflorescence on my house below DPC - no dramas.

I’ve had that on my front garden wall for years but I’ve noticed some new houses being built and they have it on the front wall halfway up the front of the house and these are £1m+ houses.

Even £1m houses can get wet, especially whist being built. We try and protect our masonry under construction, but its actually very difficult to do sometimes. Sites often just use hessian, which protects from frost but not rain.

But will it disappear eventually? The white on my front wall has been there for 20 years or more.

You need to brush them off, or they can soak back into the wall. Sometimes lime run off is confused with the issue. This can be harder to remove.

It (efflorescence) should weather out eventually. If a wall is being frequently soaked though, it may always display some leaching deposits (different to efflorescence) as it dries.
