Why do we need to know the orientation of the house

So we know if the garden is sun or shade, what way the wind usually blows

What is the best orientation of a house? Front North West, side of house (no windows, doors) North East, rear garden South East?

Or front North, Rear South?

What would be an ideal orientation?

The orientation as such is immaterial, but normally front bedrooms to catch the morning sun and a rear garden and lounge to catch the afternoon/evening sun is desirable.

But from an energy/sustainable point of view, the north face wants few if any windows and thermally efficient walls, and the south/sun facing walls want lots of glass and a design to assist ventilation and heat transfer
