Was in northern Italy last week, and copper guttering and downpipes are very common. Interesting to see 100mm-or-so soldered elbows etc.

But why don't people wake up to find that some tamarri has made off with their downpipes in the night?

Probably because Italy doesn't breed the thieving scum like this country does??? There's a small cluster of bungalows near me, built as a 'one off' by a local businessman in the 1950's, for elderly residents of the town. All the gutters and downpipes are copper.

Oh, and the Public toilets in town. The council architect specified a sheet copper roof when they were refurbed in the early 00's, quite what was wrong with concrete tiles I dont know, but hey, its only taxpayers money..... :evil:

Interesting! My mate in Shepherd's Bush waited as long as 20 minutes before his scrap copper tube was spotted and went west.
Perhaps this reflects favourably on the culture of the lovely Italian North.

On the upside, I benefited recently from my old rads being collected uninvited by the local pike-arazzi, even if it was technically theft. But I would more happily live without their free services.

...some tamarri has...

...some tamarri have... :wink:

Let me think; it could be due to;

1) prisons that are not holiday camps;

2) carabinieri who are armed and better armed than most of the criminals;

3) a benefits system that doesn't attract every criminal that has gained access to the EU;

4) irate Italians with access to hunting firearms;

5) legislation that makes trespass a criminal offence, rather than a civil dispute;

6) legislation that doesn't criminalize a property owner who resorts to the use of force to protect his property;

7) a legal system that uses independent examining magistrates, rather than the adversarial UK system that requires both parties to employ expensive lawyers.

and/or 8 ) less freely available legal aid for the accused.

more to do with the make up off the family unit and other nations not abandoning there children to fend for themselves after school

in other countries there's less fragmentation with parts off families migrating to other areas separating the generations and allowing the disipline to reduce with succesive generation

also everybody knows everyone else so not much chance off getting away with it

I live in the sticks and 25 years ago you could leave home ,leaving your home unlocked, leave the workshop open with tools and materials lying around, and keys left in the tractors and come back in a week and everything was as how you left.
Not any more with the predatory gangs that are roaming about at free will. :(

Just taking a drive in the countryside now and you can be sure your number plate will be phoned in to the police.
