Lots of posts on here which state that one coat plaster is bad, but I can't seem to find out what actually in particular is so bad about it.

Roy c likes it  ; but, by his own admission he’s “old school” & been at it for a long time; thats by no means is meant as derogatory ;) I’m relatively new to the game with only around 5 years experience. After a couple of early DIY disasters using proper plaster I switched to using one coat as it can be built up to a large thickness in one hit, gives you far more time & can easily be “kept going”. I got good results but as I progressed found it was far too slow, gives an inferior finish IMO & if you try to rush it it’s easy to balls it up; certainly the stuff I was using back then. After a while I got up enough courage, experience & a couple of “teach ins” by another pro, I made the switch back to modern base/finish plasters & then progressed into base rendering. I found the switch back to be a revelation; so much quicker & easier (for me) to use & get near perfect results. But as Roy has said on another thread, it’s probably more to do with my never being taught to use it properly.
