I have an eight year old Worcester 24CDi LE combi boiler installed and have been told it is essential that the only radiator in the flat without a TRV must be left on all the time the central heating is on.

What is the reason for that please, and what could happen if this radiator was turned off while the central heating is in operation?

The reason I am asking this question is that this radiator is in the hall and isn't always needed!

if you turn that rad off the room stat will never detect heat so that room will be cool and the others roasting.
so leave the rad on so the stat can turn on/off when needs to

This rad is acting as a reference radiator for the operation of the room stat... it is probably acting as the by-pass for the system too

"it is probably acting as the by-pass for the system too"

Do you mean the radiator without the TRV is acting as a safety device for the boiler; something like a relief valve to allow a continual flow round the system?
