I m renovating a 1970s bungalow.In kitchen stripped up to 4 layers of wallpaper back to plaster,filled any holes and coated with wickes basecoat.Tried to paint this with homebase Kitchen and Bathroom paint,then Homebase Duracoat-both acrylic water-based emulsions.After one brushstroke,the next stroke where it overlapped the first one lifted off the first lot of paint and it stuck to the brush.Tried several brushes-one brand new-no difference.At times the paint previously applied just rolled up like a carpet.I ended up just wiping most of it off.About a week later the stuff thats left on the wall seems firmly attached,but is very patchy.The surface of Basecoat is very "plasticy" and the paint when applied would nt stick.Temperature was about 13C and not unusually damp conditions.Any ideas about what to do next?

You should have used their new plaster coating.
You now need to thin it right down -= at least 25% water and try again.
Your problem is that the substrate is sucking the moisture out of your coating and the 'plasticy' stuff is the residue.
