We discovered a leaking roof last night and have had two quotes so far (two more to come). £1800 and £4700, which is confusing.

A bit of the front of the house sticks out and has a gable end, so there are two valleys. Both quotes are to replace the tile valleys with plastic and replace the felt, then reuse the same tiles and replace any that break. Both said a scaffold tower would be about £300. The roof is probably 4m wide including the overhangs and sticks out by 1m.

What would be a fair price for the job, and so which one is off the mark? I'm in the midlands.

I got two quotes from two roofing companies to replace some rotten sections of sofits and fascias, pvc cladding, new guttering and downpipe. One quote was £3500, one was £1250. I went with cheapest and they did a good job.

A third guy came today, also £4700. He wants to replace both valleys with GRP and re-felt either side of the valleys, then reinstate. The second guy wants to renew the entire gable battens and all, just reusing the original tiles. He sounds like better value. The first guy was just going to replace 1 valley with GRP and make good.

You need to ascertain what needs doing to the roof, spec' it up and have the roofers quote for your tailored needs, not just get a load of random finger in the air quotes, whose content wildly varies. it's impossible to compare that way.
