wider fireplace

Ok im thinking of making our fireplace a bit wider to take a log basket for this winter.

As you can see no visible lintel above. Any advice appreciated before i get my trusty angle grinder out.

Take the fire out, and then post some more pictures. They may have just fitted a metal bar at the top of the opening. Decide how big you want the opening, and then get a lintel to match; then get the angle grinder out.
