Widest possible garage door

Hi all,

Hope this is the right section for this...

Buying a house which has an up-and-over garage door, 6ft6 wide, in a ~7ft wide hole, with ~3" of wooden frame either side. One wall is shared with the house, so "flat", and the other wall has a pillar at the end, meaning the "room" is about a foot wider than the opening.

I would like to replace the door to give the widest opening possible without any structural changes - i.e. with the least width given over to frame.

I understand I could quite easily save the ~3" frame width on the pillar side by setting the frame behind the pillar, not on the side of it. However suggestion seems to be that I'm stuck with the 3" frame the other side.

Are there any other options -for example sliding doors with a shallow track? (Would have thought a 1" track would have been wide enough..?)

Happy to consider any type of door except "barn door" types (ground slopes upwards outside garage, so they wouldn't open).

These may be an option as they sit behind the brickwork/timber opening. A phone call to them may give more info though .......
