First of all what is a "Bleazer"?? I know this as being the thing you hold in front of a traditional open fire to get it going. I have always known them as "bleazers" but can't find a link for the word on the internet, so may be they are known by a different name.

Anyway, I have one made out of aluminium, and I would like to add a window so as I can watch what is happening. Obviously I am going to need a piece of fire resistant glass, anyone suggest a source for salvaging a piece about 7" x 5"

If nothing else I should get an award for the strangest question ever asked on the forum :D

Been more than a few years since i heard that term being used :D

we used a newspaper! the fire was alight when the paper turned brown or went up

i would try the local dump! bound to be some baxi fire fronts lying around.

Yeah!!! gold medal for that question

Have only recently progressed from there with my aluminium one. You really need a broad sheet as the tabloids arnt wide enough allowing the edges to get sucked in and catch light

However your comments make me think, when the paper starts to get singed the bleezer has done its job. So maybe my window should have a cling film type glass that will melt or open when it gets too hot. When it melts or opens the air will be drawn in through the window and the effect of the bleezer will be lost, so less chance of setting light to the chimney.

could give everyone a laugh on dragons den :D

When I light a fire I use a hair dryer, gets a fire going much quicker.

Funny you should say that I read some where that if you use a blow torch to light the fire the extra hot air causes an updraught that draws the fire even more. Not as cheap as a bit of newspaper though. :)

wouldn't work for me, only burn logs and light fire on top of old ashes. Hair dryer would make a hell of a mess. Strangely the bleezer
does not lift the old ashes, the draught must just miss it.

I like using the bleezer, very natural. It reminds me of early turbo charges on cars, press the pedal down, count to ten, then woooosh ....
