Stripped a load of wall paper off last night in a upstairs bedroom. Was doing the bit about the window. Pulled off the paper and the lintel above the window started cracking in the middle, then a chunk fell out.

It seems the wall paper was holding it together. I thought lintels should be concrete, but when I tapped it it sounded hollo, it was also white in colour and looked more like plaster of paris.

The house was built in the 1930's do I need to get someone in ASAP for it ? Will post picture this evening.

Are you saying you're tapping the lintel and not plaster for the hollow sound?

Could be a wooden lintel with plaster lath?

A metal box section lintel?

The white colour might be the plaster?

I wouldn't worry too much unless you have big cracks etc, a photo will tell us more
