Windows in stone walls

We have a builder fitting new windows into walls that are very thick stone. As part of the renovation work a new lining wall has been built inside with a standard cavity between the lining wall and the old stone wall. The window frames have been put in and placed in the cavity, which as I understand it, is the correct procedure to ensure that any water running down the cavity exits outside the window. The problem is that the walls are so thick that the windows look bizarre so far back into the wall. We have had comments that the house looks a bit like a prison or garrison. Are there any sensible options that would allow us to move the windows further out (away from the cavity) but keep the risk of water entering the house at a minimum?
