Windows messenger v Live messenger

My daughter tried to send me a file but was unable. She is using live messenger and I used messenger and Pidgin neither of which would accept the file. So I down loaded Live messenger and installed on my PC and in the end found how to configure it.
But the address book in Outlook Express disappeared.
I uninstalled messenger and reinstalled and now I have both messenger and live messenger and it seems they are only compatible as far as text and with video and voice they are incompatible.
This seems a little daft and I wonder if it’s just some setting which is wrong?
