No more a-hijacking will I go.

So...

Options for a wireless control for an Intergas Exclusive 36?

  1. Properly wireless, i.e. battery powered, not a wireless one with a big thick wire meandering over to the nearest socket. Or dangling down the wall if its mounted there.
  2. Preferably one which will talk directly to the boiler, not via a receiver bolted to the wall next to the boiler and more chuffin wires.
  3. And preferably one I can work by poking at it, not by having to install an app on my phone or tablet.

Currently got all 3 of those with a nigh-on 20 year old WB boiler and WB badged Honeywell Digistat. Are we really going backwards?

If you've got wires in place, or are prepared to install them, then yes go for the wired version. It'll save any potential communication issues.

I havent got wires, but I could put them in if I have to. I guess theyd be more reliable than a wireless, and at least I wouldnt be able to see the damn things or permanently tie up a power socket. But Id still not get #2 :-(

Does anybody make one that fits a standard back-box, or does "mains powered" always mean it uses a plug in power supply, not a direct 230v connection?

So if wired it is to be, what wires? For best future-proofing flexibility, 5-core mains flex or Cat5/5e/6?

Both?

And where wires? We used to have the current Digistat fixed to the wall in the hall, until the rad there broke, then we plonked it on the sideboard in the living room.

Wheres generally regarded as the best place in the house? The hall rad is going to get replaced so that will again be a heated space.

Sounds like you have the older DT20 thermostat with the receiver built into the boiler facia, if so then replacing can be done but not straight forward, you can still get a replacement pair for what you already have, not so cheap though, post a pic of the controls on your boiler and I will tell you if that is indeed your setup

Thanks, Ian, but I'm replacing the boiler, so what I have now is going to be scrapped.

FYI it's this

The programmer must use Opentherm to talk to the boiler to control its modulation, not just do on/off.

I would very much have liked the programmer to be battery powered, but I did wonder if this might be the case:

There are no battery powered OpenTherm thermostats, no. The two-way flow of information between thermostat and boiler is pretty much constant with an OT stat, so it would burn through batteries far too quickly

If it has to be externally powered then so be it but I really do not want to see the power lead, so I really want one where I can fix the unit to the wall and bury the cable.

And I would prefer the programming to be done on the unit itself, and not have to install some app on another device, but that may be another so be it.

[rant on] Was looking for a replacement for a small electric panel heater, to find that even that has a mandatory Android/iOs app and wifi connection. W T *&$*&%*&%'~ is wrong with everybody. The whole )*$&%(&*$#; world has gone )*$*%&%*@? mad, with this obsession with having oohshinythings for no reason whatsoever apart from the fact that they are oohshinythings. [rant off]

Anyway - suggestions on how to get as much as I can of what I want would be welcome.

I might also ask on the home automation forum but I fear that my attitude to oohshinythings might not go down well there.
