when replacing a consumer unit and finding the wires for a number of circuits to short would it be acceptable to use junction boxes? or replace cable ?even if it means chasing out a lot of plasterwork ? thoughts?? especially NIC guys.

NIC or not, the right way is the right way.
Replace cable is the ideal solution.
Junction boxes fine if they remain accessible
Properly made crimped/soldered joints if not accessible (or accessible)
A small enclosure with DIN rail and terminal blocks is a neat solution
I'm an ex NIC guy if that is any good
