Hi guys,

I need a little more wiring advice for my sixth and final light.

Please see the attached photo.

The lower red gives a reading of 240v with the left black and 220v with the top black.

The red wire on the right gives no reading when tested with either of the blacks.

How can I use this information to identify the switched live wire that should go to the light?

I know that I will be boxing off the two live (red) wires. I am just not sure which black is neutral and which is the switched live for the light fitting.

Since the left black gives 240v, I am assuming that this is neutral, although I am looking for confirmation before I proceed.

Also, for my own learning, why are the bottom red and top black producing a reading of 220v?

Thanks in advance,

Joe.

How many lights are controlled by the switch?

Was the switch in the on position when you carried out these tests?

Thanks, JS.

One stairway light controlled by two switches. One upstairs and one downstairs.

The upstairs switch on the wall does not currently work. I am due to replace all of the switches when I have finished the lights.

I tested with the downstairs switch on and off. There was no change in the readings.

Unfortunately, I did not take a photograph. Lesson learned!

Turn the power Off, you should not be live working.
Just do a continuity test between red and black of each.
Operating the switch will toggle between open/closed circuit on your meter

Try. Join the two reds together in a connector. They don’t connect to anything else.
One black to L on the light. The other black to the N.
