Hello

Can anyone offer advice on this as it would be appreciated. My kitchen has 3 sets of lights operated from one switch.

The main light is wired as normal and linked to the switch, the other two lights have been connected to it. So when I operate the switch all 3 come on.

My question is ... can I take the two side lights and add a switch so I can operate them without the main light. My main thought was to add a switch and then take a cable to the lights power source. But I guess this is against regulations etc. etc. Any thoughts how I can do this.

you have a few options.

best way to do it is to make the cables to the lights a permanent supply. then take a cable from each of the lights to a switch. that way you have all lights independantly controlled

You need to identify the live feed into the cieling rose of the main light..this will be the one that is connected to one side of the switch, the other core from the switch obviously connects to the live to the lights.

Run a cable from the live and Neutral feed to each of the other lights, but switch the live in the usual way.

1) No earth at the switch???

2) You are aware of Part P of the Building Regulations?

He doesn't need any help beyond the answer you gave him.

But the possible lack of an earth at the switch ought to be mentioned.

And, no matter what you think of Part P, it is the law, and karawara88 might not want to break it...

BAS..do you ever drive too fast? Have you ever bought cheap fags, tabacco or alcohol? Have you ever bought anything cash to avoid VAT and get a good deal? Have you ever done anything that breaks a law of some description?

If you have, then banging on about Part P is hypocrasy. If you say you have never done anything wrong then I would challenge that statement.

I have no intention of discussing this with you. You know full well what my position is, and by deliberately misrepresenting it you are only trying to start an argument.

BAS, I am not attempting to start an argument, I am simply highlighting a point....we all ignore laws when we feel it suits our purpose..however it is up to us to decide if we are willing to take responsibility for the repurcussions if it all ends in tears...

Hello,

Thanks for the replies, I now have my head round what I need to do.

There is an earth to the switch I did not draw it in as it was just an illustration to show the switch. Also I am aware of part p I don't break laws, but may fracture one or two

FWL, you are right we do but karawara88 needs to know which laws he/she is breaking and BAS simply pointed one out
