Women and children first

For future incidents you have to assume that everyone involved is of equally good deserving character. In that case, why should the 19 year old kid feel compelled to let the old woman have the last place on a lifeboat? Obviously it's completely wrong if there's a situation where big strong men are trampling over women and kids, which is probably why this women and children first business arose, and understandably so. I just don't think it should be so black and white as seems accepted.

I strongly believe any son of mine would give up his place in the lifeboat (Probably filled with 19 year old lads) and help the old girl into it.
Not women in general though of a younger age.

I agree with you in principle though. Tough one.

In an emergency it should be black and white.... Women and children first otherwise the majority of folk would go down with the ship whilst everyone debates the value of saving each and individual life based on age, achievements, potential, past history blah blah blah

Always women and children first in my book.
However there should be a competent person where possible ( I know difficult to do) from the ship in each lifeboat. Trained in first aid and be able to use the (if any) radio/location equipment.

Cruise ships DO have enough lifeboat and inflatable liferaft space for all passengers and crew - typically with around 10% over capacity.

Every passenger and crew member is assigned to a muster station from where they are to embark their assigned boats. Embarcation is done on first come first served from the muster station - as has been pointed out women and children first means splitting up family groups and arguments about at what age a young male ceases to be a child, and that just slows the whole process down.

There CAN be problems if a ship is listing heavily to one side as this can mean that it is impossible to launch the boats from the "uphill" side, but usually if a ship is taking on significant amounts of water then the passengers would be put into the boats almost immediately - before a list can become too severe - they can always be re-boarded if and when the problem is brought under control.

In the case of the Costa Concordia the crew took the decision NOT to put the passengers in the boats straight away, but to use the time the ship had left to try and head into port to make the rescue operation much easier. Reasonable judgement call in the circumstances.

Fair enough, but subsequent behaviour of the senior managers of the crew and the crew members themselves was not. Although we are not aware of all circumstances, there seems to have been a state of denial from the boys "upstairs" which created a delay in reporting the true status of the ship and its inexorable demise which if it hadn't been the case would have enabled other vessels within the vicinity to react promptly and potentially prevent the loss of any human life.

The crew can only be advised by the captain So the crew could have not made that decision, and never will

Please do not insult the crew for a disaster that seems should not have happened

The Captain, and the senior officers, are all members of the crew.

The Press has reported that the Captain never did give the order to abandon ship, so if he didn't - then some other member of the crew must have.

Kids first of course but it can't be right if a seventy year old woman on a sinking ship gets preference over a 19 or 20 year old lad who's just starting his life.

Because the woman is frail and needs help. The 19/20 year old lad is fit and strong nad has more chance of survival.

Who are we to judge who may die or not in a accident situation?
Fair enough if you might die in the rescue you can call it as you see it, but to say. "No your not coming on board"...........because of age not the safety of the lifeboat.
You would probably get thrown off yourself.

Beats me why these ships don't have an auto pilot that keeps the ship in deep water or an auto anchor drop system activated and engine shutdown when shallow waters are detected.

The contols deck must have been screaming its head off though and no one listening.
Were they all partying?
