We have 2 computers. One will display images on emails, websites etc, the other just shows a red cross. Why is this?

Could be firewall/privacy/security settings. Can you give more info on the PCs, operating system, how they are connected? Any firewall/security software?

The one that works is a dell laptop. The other is an intel 1.8Ghz I think, (it's at work and I'm not). Both have broadband connection, both have xp home, both have norton internet security and antivirus.

try disabling Norton Internet Security as a first test. I hate that product. Infests the registry, won't uninstall properly and can lock you down like you wouldn't believe. The Anti-virus side isn't too bad.

I guess you have a router/access point for these machines to both connect to broadband? If so, check the logs for evidence of Smurfing/Spamming. If not, how are you connecting them to the internet?

I disconnected the internet security and it didn't solve the problem. The modem router only shows recent logs but I have had this problem for months.

Have you cleared temporary Internet files?

What do the logs say?

Also, are you running any kind of web control software such as Surfcontrol, which may block\filter content types or some websites which host files?

I have cleared temporary files many times since I had this problem. I am not running any surfcontrol software that I know of. This is what the router logs say, I hope you know how to interpret it!

IF IE, look under Tools->Internet Options

Click on the advanced tab. Scroll down, look for the tick box Show Pictures, and confirm that it is ticked.

Let's start easy first !!

All those DOS entries refer to denial of service on various ports, none of them referring to an internal address though, which is odd.

Which router/modem do you have?

Have you got any anti-spyware software and have you scanned recently?

Yes, the show pictures box is ticked, router is a netgear DG834, I have Ad-aware and spybot and use them boath about once a week.

Ah, ok, there have been several issues with this router.

First, make sure you are using the latest firmware as there was a problem with packet fragmentation with early versions. Also, this router HATES software firewalls and Netgear recommend that you uninstall them (IE your Norton Internet Security) Also make sure your maximum transfer unit (MTU) settings are optimised.

Have a look here for details of how to do all the above.
