Wood flooring advice

We are looking to fit a wooden floor (laminate style) in our dining room, and would like a bit of advice,

Its being laid on a traditional floorboarded floor (1960's), what would be the best type of underlay for a quality job.

Our Dining room joins the living room via a sliding door apperture, what do you experts think the best method of neatly joining the wooden flooring to the exisiting carpet will be, where the dividing walls are, as seen in the diagram

The flooring will be at a different height (slightly) than the carpeted living room. as the wooden flooring sections are quite thick.

Which is the professional way of laying the flooring sections ie. side to side or front to back.

Any advice would be most welcome

Re underlay, depends on how even /stable the original floor is, if stable and flat, a foam underlay may be appropriate or it may need boarding with plywood first. Re the join, you need an offset threshold strip if the heights are different.

There will be laying instructions provided with the laminate you buy as it depends on what type you buy.
