Do people tend to put a wood frame on the wall around the bath before fitting ,if so is this usually placed a few mm below the bath, and silicone put on it just before you push the bath back?

Yes, I would.

If the bath is fibreglass, plastic type, I would fit batten to wall, this ensure that it will give support, especially corner bath. And help secured bath.

Thanks should it be positioned a few mm below the lower bath rim? With wood before placing the bath in place?

Yes, fit batten so bath can sit on top as well the feets on floor. Offer the bath first and level it out and if you happy with level, mark out on wall below bath, remove bath and fit batten. Can use sealant to secured bath but best use bracket if supplied with bath.

Daniel.
