Are you sure he's a plasterer? It's not ordinarily a good idea. That said, I skimmed over a very small area of wood chip in a house I own which seemed to have been stuck to the wall with superglue. It was all but impossible to get it off, and is still sound. But it was a small strip - about 800mm x 50mm.
 
The wood will absorb the moisture from the wet plaster and expand....then when it dries out it will contract, thats when the plaster falls off.

Gyproc over if you can.

And dump the plasterer.
