Wooden ceiling

HELP

I have a wooden suspended ceiling (about 1 1/2" slats with 1/8" square grooves between). Can I get this skimmed with plaster and how would I prepair the wood. I don't think the ceiling would take the weight of plasterboard.

Remove it and use plasterboard - the ceiling won't fall down.
