My front gate (metal) is hanging on 4"post, the post is not being held securely to the garden wall.
Can I get something that is about 6" long that will fix securely to the brick work, passing through the wooden post. If possible I don't want to remove the wooden post.

Get yourself some Fischer 10mm SX plugs, 50mm long...

And some M8 150mm coach screws...

And some M8 penny washers. (search for "form c" washers if you're getting them from eBay/amazon/etc. They are the large diameter and thicker material type)

Drill through the timber with an 11 or 12mm wood or HSS bit. (the plug will pass through it easier by being slightly oversize)
Bung some wood preserver in the hole if you have some to hand.
Drill the brick with a 10mm masonry bit, 50mm deep.
Hammer the plug through the wood and into the brick, using the coach screw as a drift.
Drive the screw in with the washer on.

Oh, and make sure that the screw and washer are either both galvanised(often called BZP on eBay/etc), or both stainless steel.

There are a few different iterations of them. The ones I use are drilled at 6.5mm but check for the specific ones you buy as brands differ.

Ok all was going well till bricks split, I was getting a nice bite, then the brick split, tried two more same thing. It is a very, very old wall.
Is there a resin I can put in the hole that will hold the bolt?

Use chemical (resin) fixings. Google it or check your local builders merchant.

If the brick split, you may need a slightly larger pilot hole.
