Wooden Fire surrounds

Hi eveyone!

Does anyone know whether I would be able to use an untreated wooden fire surround on my open fire? Would I have to treat it with fire retardent paint if so, or do I need to be looking at a slate/marble/stone surround instead?

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

An old house I just worked on had a 200 year old carved oak surround ..Huge coal/log fire, no problems so far.......
