Varnish is a lot of trouble to sand down and recoat, when it cracks or fails you get black stains from water penetration and does not withstand weather.
I now use water-repellent waxy garden stains for outdoor timber, it is very easy to wash down and recoat with no sanding required. Usually sold for sheds and fences, though the Ronson (and Wickes own-brand) decking stain gives a better sheen and allows the grain to show through, and adheres to planed wood. It seems better quality.
If you want to colour match, you can use Colron on the bare wood before applying the finish.
