Hi

See photo of example window. This photo shows exterior sash trim on left and right in place. Solid wall property.

I have removed c44cm of the bottom right hand trim as rotten, .. to repair. All fine there, but what surprised me was big holes behind the trim going back c15cm depth by 20cm high, 5cm wide, bricks at the back.

I cannot see why anyone would of done that. Explains why window on inside so cold. Ideas? I have put some spray foam now in their and cut to size wood piece as per photo. (Also Silka wood treatment on)

The grey stuff in photo is two part epoxy as too dark now to do anything else to fix. Will be doing 2nd layer, sanding, paint as weather improves.

Hopefully rest of windows not this badly fitted.

Tbh no :(

. The window parts in the link you show are not the additional, unnecessary wood vertical bits in my photo I just removed and replaced that serve no real purpose bar decoration as far as I can see. Unless big gaps of wood not abutting the brick is a design to let wood breathe.

In theory I could of completely removed them, put bricks N morter in their as doesn't affect the window workings.

My guess is the builder cut the opening to a larger size originally as noone said window width ordered, windows arrive, and in a bodge job someone whacks a couple of 20mm vertical bits to cover error and couldn't be bothered to fill the void.
