Worcester Boiler 28CDi not working.

Hi,

Having a problem with a 28CDI boiler and was just looking for some advice before having to spend anything on callout's etc.

For a bit of history, the boiler has worked flawlessly so far as i can tell, and even when an engineer came round to inspect it, and found the pressure gauge was reading zero, the system still seemd to work fine, the radiator's warmed up and hot water was alway's coming through. He didn't seem to think there was anything to worry about so i didn't. However, last night one of the radiator's was quite cold, even with the heating on so naturally i assumed trapped air and went to bleed it. Opened the bleed valve (heatig was turned off at the time of course) and sure enough air came out, so letting it drain the boiler made kind of a gurgling sound, like water was being sucked through something and eventually water started coming out of the bleed valve. I tightened it back up with it being late i didn't switch the heating back on.

Now, to this morning. I went and switched the heating on for a bit and everything seemed to start up fine but after about 10 second's, the flame detection light goes off and there is no hot water/heating coming through, although the light to say CH is on stay's light and the boiler does make the normal noises like when it switches the heater off once the right temp has been reached. I have trid using the reset buton just incase but to no avail. Everytime i switch the heating or hot water on the flame detection light stay's for around 10 seconds then goes off resulting in no hot water/heating. Now i've searched everywhere for the filling key but have been unable to find it so will speak to the landlady see if she has it but is there anything else you can suggest i check or try before ringing and engineer ?

Any advice you can give would be most appreciative

You dont seem to have learnt anything!

If you go bleeding then the immediate next thing to do is to repressurise the boiler. You should never bleed anything if you cannot repressurise the boiler.

Of course there may be another problem.

You say you are a tenant but also talk about paying for callouts. Thats obviously the landlord's responsibility so after pressurising the boiler if its still not working then you need a boiler engineer.

As for the engineer, it was more of an inspection not a service so he didn't re-pressure it, sorry for the confusion (it was a gas safety check/service for the gas fire/boiler etc, not an actual boiler service itself). He did say it was working fine though, which was confusing to him, but said it was probably nothing to worry about, so i didn't. I checked all over for the key, under the metal pulloff plate, on top of the boiler but it's nowhere at all so i assume the landlady has it somewhere. The reason why i didn't re-pressure the boiler was it was already reading zero on the guage so it didn't register in my mind to re-pressure it since the needle didn't move. Very silly mistake of course and if the guage was at the right spot i would have noticed it go down. Sometime's i just need a good old bonk on the noggin. The only reason i posted here is im waiting on the landlady getting back to me and just wondered if there was something else i'd missed or done wrong. Thank's for the reply

Re-pressurising The System (See Fig. 1a).
(If in doubt leave this procedure to your installer).
Remove the bottom panel to gain access to the filling
loop assembly.
Insert the bayonet end of the filling key into the
corresponding cut outs in the filling loop housing and
twist to lock the key in place.
Turn the grey knob anti-clockwise to allow water
ingress and fill until the required pressure is reached.
Turn the grey knob clockwise to stop filling and
remove the filling key by lining up the bayonet end of
the key with the cut outs in the filling loop housing and
withdrawing the key.
N.B. The key must always be removed from the
filling loop housing after the system has been filled to
prevent accidental filling and to comply with Bylaw 14
of the Water Bylaws Scheme.
Store the key in a safe place for future use and
refit the bottom panel.

Its essential that the pressure is kept at about 1.5 Bar and never allowed to fall below 1.0.

You should obviously have made arrangement with the landlady to have the pressure increased when it was noticed before.

I suspect your landlady does not trust you not to lose the filling key.

I dont carry one as its the owners responsibility to keep it safe and no one has ever given me one. I wish that Worcester would send me a complimentary key!

Inserting the key and filling is not as simple as it should be with these boilers. The valve body is plastic and can be snapped or cracked if forced, which then leaks and has to be replaced. This may be the reason the key is not to hand. Having said that. the Landlady should then be on hand to fill it when needed.

(Have you looked in the cutlery draw, they inevitably end up there.)

your car key will also snap when forced, as will spectacles, your remote control and the plumber.

the worcester integrated filling loop will never seize if used correctly. the problem is that 9 out of 10 people will spend half an hour reading the tv guide, but can't find 5 minutes to check the user manual

I never fit them. I simply fit a filling loop and as a result I have four filling kits kicking about the van for the new CDis.

Hi, did you get the new pressure indicator replaced? the one reading zero, You can buy a key for it from any plumbers, if the guage is still not working they cast about 18 quid, I replaced mine a while back, now a new problem, no hot water unlless heating on, pain in the bum eh.
