makes sense if "proof" means "test"
And "degrees proof" for alcohol.

But proof doesn't have to mean the same thing in every use - the second interpretation works as well.

The place I bought it for is now selling it for £84.36, so 14p better than you have found. I can't remember exactly, but I think I paid about £10 less than that by 'pre-ordering' a good while ago.
