A few years ago the previous owners painted the house with a "breathable" paint. The house is lime rendered and it was the wrong paint for the lime.

The paint is now peeling off in places and I have begun to clear an area.

What are my options as my budget is not high enough to replace the render on the house.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The only thing you can do is remove all the paint before recoating with the right type of paint/limewash, but that's not going to be a simple job.

As a cheap option, you could try softening the paint with very hot water before pressure washing/scraping but some lime renders wont like that and there is a high risk of damaging the surface. Everbuild brick and patio cleaner does strip some paints but would probably need diluting to avoid damaging the render which may reduce it's abilities. You will need to use protective equipment and ensure that no run off enters the drainage system when using it. Chemical strippers/stripping companies would probably work (never had to deal with this issue myself) but would cost quite a lot. Whatever you do, it's either going to be very labour intensive or expensive. :(

Are you getting damp issues internally or any external deterioration? If so, you will need to get it sorted as soon as possible but this time of year isn't really ideal.

Good luck. :)
