Hi,
Can anybody tell me if a not having a room stat in a Y-plan system will cause premature failure of a mid-position valve on a system fitted with TRVs on most radiators?
I realise that the boiler will be on a lot more than without it. What will be the effect on the system?
Cheers

No stat will have no effect on the motor valve.

BUT having no stat will result in perhaps 20% extra fuel consumption.

It can also cause a problem to the boiler and pump if there is no "always on" rad as there should be! Or an auto bypass.

My view is that it is very foolish not to have a room stat just on account of the waste of gas!

Thanks for your reply Tony.

Unfortunately that was not the answer I was hoping for. :(

I was looking for some amo to give to a tenant so he's landlord could see the benefit on having a stat installed - the landlord does not care about the tenant's bills unfortunately.

I will suggest to the tenant that it would be worth he's to have one fitted.

Thanks again.

In the summertime and very locally I would fit a room stat close to the boiler for just £65. That could be recovered in a few months from savings on gas.

A wireless stat is a bit more, perhaps £100 for a cheaper one.

Why should there need to be an 'always on rad' or an auto byepass on a Y plan system
when at least one port is the open position at all times?

Because in theory all trvs could turn off in ch only mode ;) leaving nowhere for the water to flow without a bypass or a permenantly open rad. Y plan should only need a permantly open rad. Whereas an s plan needs a bypass as well.
