Can anyone advise how to remove the drum from a Zanusi washing m/c to replace bearings. There is no opening in the back or sides of cabinet. Does it get removed out of the top or bottom. The whole drum assembly with motor etc is mounted on a plastic base. If this needs withdrawn with the assy, is it difficult to reconnect the drum springs at the top? Kitchen is a bit cluttered at the moment!

The casing on most Zanussi machines split down the middle of each side. You need to remove the bolts on the top, rear & bottom centre of ech side. A word of warning before you start though, depending on the model, you need to be sure it is only the bearings & not the spider as for some models you have to get a complete drum assy., making a repair uneconomical.

Thanks very much jj4491 for this - have now got the assy out. My model is an Aquacycle 1050 - do you know whether this can be repaired. If a new spider is also required is this still not cheaper than a new m/c?
Also how can I be sure that the bearings are worn or whether the shock absorbers are the cause of the loud banging during full spin. Its not obvious to me which is worn.

If you have the complete drum assy out on the floor, then hold the inner drum at the front with one hand & the outer casing with the other & try to flex the drum in an up/down or side to side direction If the bearings or spider are u/s there will be movement & you will have to split the outer casing to find out which is the problem. If it is completely solid then there is a possibility it is the dampers, which when you have got to that stage on an old machine you might as well replace them anyway as they are not expensive. As I said previously, on some Zanusis you have to get the complete drum assy as the spider is not available by itself. Although cheaper than a new machine, in my opinion it is not worth the hassle as further faults are likely to start appearing in the near future.

Many thanks again - yes there is movement up and down and I thought it was probably bearings or shaft. As I've got this far, I might as well split the drum and find out what needs replaced. I've checked with local spares supplier and for my model (FLS 1183W) the spider is available separately if needed.
You've been a great help - hope I dont have to bother you with more problems!
