sounds like you have something stuck, may even be the heater.
I am not familiar with a zanusi, but it would be unusual to find an "access panel" usually you have to take m/c apart.

On these machines the cabinet is split down the middle and you need to take the back half off for access. Take the lid off and you will see 2 screws on the top edge each side. There are also screws near the bottom rearcorners and screws concealed with plastic plugs at the bottom of both sides. Remove all these screws and unclip the water inlet extension assembly before pulling the back off. If there is something stuck in the drum you can often extract it through the hole for the heater element.
