We are planning to have a new condensing combi boiler installed. An engineer came round who checked our water flow was ok. However, we are NOT sure as to whether to have our existing zinc hot and cold water pipes replaced by copper pipes. We would be most grateful for your advice whether a copper pipe would be neccessary for a combi.

Many thanks

What makes you think the pipes are made from zinc? If I am not mistaken, zinc is quite soft ( eg dry cell case) making it unsuitable for pressure applications and cost would be another factor to consider. What you do get is metal pipe which is galvenised (zinc coated). When zinc coating is worn out, pipe soon turns to dust (when worked on)

He is right you know

sounds to me like auld galvy steel, if thats the case rip them out and whack in copper, as the steel wil have corroded and reduced flow and circulation and that will kill your nice shiney new boiler in no time

If it is steel, when the installer carries out a powerflush (as he should) then you will probably get leaks everywhere

Dear mr DP & Mr Corgiman,

Many thanks indeed for your response. Our knowledge in this matter is minimum. We would appreciate if you could advise us whether we need to have our existing galvanised steel pipe replaced by copper pipe for both downstair and upstair where the water (hot & cold are feeding to the shower/bathroom). Also, do you have preference to either Valient, Worcestor or Halstead boiler, eg which one you think is more reliable and give better flow?

Yours sincerely
Mr & Mrs Hess
