My bathroom is plastered, so do i need to do anything with the sections to be tiled ? Can i just tile up or do i prime the plaster ?

Is it plaster over board or over block/brick? Is it a wet or dry area? What size & weight are your tiles per sq/m? This dictates the type of adhesive you need to use which determines if you need to prime or, indeed, if it will actually support the weight of your tiles!

I would advise you read the Tiling Forum Sticky & archive threads, it may prevent you making disastrous & potentially expensive mistakes.

The walls are all baton and board. the shower area is cement board. the tiles we havent bought yet.

I assume stone tiles will be heavier then ? I think we will be going for some type of stone.

Your better off not plastering if tiling; unplastered boards have a max tile weight of 32kg/sqm, plastering drops this to just 20 kg/sqm & these weights include up to 4 kgs/sqm for the adhesive & grout. You will have to watch the weight, natural stone & anything more than 8mm thick could exceed 16 kg/sqm & the addy/grout weight may put you OTT. There is undoubtedly a safety margin & my guess would be around 10% but that’s just my opinion. So around 18 kg/sqm is going to be your absolute maximum over plaster & even that may be chancing it.

With tiles much over 250 x 250mm, you should use powder cement addy not tub ready mix or you could have adhesion problems & the addy may take weeks to set or the tiles may even fall off. If using cement addy over plaster/plasterboard, you must acrylic prime to avoid a possible reaction between the gypsum in plaster & the cement in the addy. Good to see you used cement backer board in the wet areas, you should have no weight problems with those &, depending on the make, will take up to 50 kg/sqm or more; you don’t need to prime those for powder addy. Never use standard PVA for tiling.

Use only quality trade tiling products of the correct type for your tiles & tile base - BAL, Webber, Granfix, Mapei (but not the stuff in BnQ) etc. avoid Unibomb own brand or DIY products which are mostly crap.

You need a flexible addy & grout & be careful with natural stone & some porcelain, it can be porous & some need sealing BEFORE laying/grouting to avoid staining. Use Silicone down the corners of your shower area & between the top of the tray/wall not grout.

Don’t forget to read those Tiling archive threads, post back in Tiling if you need further advice.
