Hi guys/girls.

Looking for some advise from some fellow decorators.
Has anybody used the sikkens waterbased satin? Any good? As im new to all this waterbased paint and used it a couple of times without success (mainly covering issues)I wonder if sikkens is any better?
What kind of price are you paying for it, Dulux said they can get it for me at 55quid (notsure if they quoted for 5litre or 2.5!

As the regulars on here will know i'm a big sikkens fan, i think its the best paint and stain commonly available in the UK.

The BL satura and BL primer are both very good, applies nicely and levels out well. Its important to use a synthetic brush wish i lightly dampen before i start painting with it. I believe the magura which is the WB gloss wil be available soon, its available on the continent but not here for some reason.
The downside is the price i cant remember what i paid but they're usually about £6 per litre dearer than Dulux and i've searched online but nobody is selling it much below RRP.

Thanks dcdec, does it cover in two coats aswell as looking the dogs... ? Because I did some woodwork not long ago, dis-colourd abit and it took 3coats to get it looking solid!! I think that's the eggshell you mention (is that good also?) and yes just been on a site and that's saying the gloss finish is available soon.

I think to get an absolute solid finish it needs three coats (of satin anyway) but white over white you can get away with two (and looks good) and it always come down to what you're painting and the condition, good thing with WB is you can spot prime then a light rub down and it doesn't stand out beneath the next coat

Sikkens have weird labelling but if it helps BL is always water based Rubbol is oil based, satura is satin and AZ is the oil gloss, XD is the exterior gloss, they don't do an eggshell finish, i've read that little green's acrylic eggshell is good but not tried it. Not had any discolouration, strange that you got some.

Looking forward to trying the gloss when it comes out and if its no good which i doubt, i'll carry on with the rubbol az but will undercoat with the BL primer until i can find something

Used the Rubbol BL Satura today on outside window frames.

What a doddle to use and the finish is superb!

Is it available in colours? Sikkens web site does mention this but I can only find the oil based version Plus coloured.

dcdec, mine is w/based but still called Rubbol?

Sikkens labelling is a nightmare, your right rubbol BL is water based and just rubbol is the solvent, i think the plus was added to show 2010 compliance.

You've got to be careful though as there is some argument about using the WB satura for exterior work. The sikkens UK website says its for interior use only

But the pdf data sheet which i think is probably translated from dutch says

I wonder if the dutch made paint is ok for exteriors or its a mistake by the manufacturers, i have heard that the dutch spec sikkens is better than the UK spec.

The first link does say its available in a range of colours but i've only ever used white.
It is very good paint though but unfortunately last i heard they are not going to release a WB gloss

Cheers for that - Yup, I noticed the omission of 'outdoor' on the description - checked the tin this morning, phew - it say's outdoor.

Sikkens replied back (on a Sunday) with a list of stockists, presumably who supply coloured BL Satura as this was the question.

I check with them in the morning.

You're right about the labelling being confusing, the chap at Brewers went and ordered the oil based primer and t/c, both tinted too

It took me half an hour to convince him Sikkens did a water based equivalent.

Anyhow, it finally arrived and I managed to make a start on the front door. It's a hardwood door rubbed back to bare wood but also had a chemical paint stripper applied due to the previous problem.

I have applied one coat of tinted primer which has gone on a treat, looks nice and flat although one or two darker areas where the wood colour is almost visible.

Would you recommend two coats of primer and one t/c or the other-way around?

btw, I found it helpful to have a jar of water next to the paint kettle (yogurt pot) to dip the brush in, make it flow so much better leaving a smooth flat finish.

Just looked up my old posts to see when my front door was last painted, Aug 2012 with Ruberol Satura.

More for a change than anything else, picked up a tin of Colours 'One Coat' Satin from B & Q, very impressed with their matt/silk so thought it worth a shot. First off it's not water based despite the product description, second is the finish, next to Satura it looks awful and very uneven despite a super smooth base.

There's only a few pounds cost saving between the two but Satura is still relatively difficult to obtain, today tried to order 2.5l of white for the outside but most outlets out of stock.

Went around the houses a bit on this, but it was my way of saying what a top paint Satura is, if i can get a good picture tomorrow will post up comparison.
