We are presently decorating our staircase.
We have just taken delivery of two 'Mop stick' handrails.

At present, they are just bare wood.
What can we do to make the ends (where they have been cut), more presentable?
When my husband has tried to paint the end of pieces of wood previously - the paint has just soaked into the wood - even after several layers.

I need to know what we can do to finish them off.

Can anyone please help?

A blowlamp maybe?

Sounds like you havn't used a primer on the wood..certainly not on the end grain anyway..gloss will keep being drawn in because its mostly oil and the pigment is finer.

Sand it down and undercoat it, then fill it if its rough, then undercoat and gloss it.

If its not too rough a coat of knotting may do the trick

Crumbs - give him a blow lamp, and he'd burn the place down.

Thanks for that information Zampa. I will pass it on.
