Is this new wiring safe?

Thanks for the replies folks.

Just to summarise, before I go back to them, my concerns are:
  • Wiring is a complete mess / untidy
  • Connections are not enclosed
  • Looks like 6mm twin and earth, should be at least 10mm for this shower and length of cable run
  • Shower should be on a 45A MCB, preferably type B
  • Why did they use cat 5 cable to power LEDs? Could this be a fire risk?
Does this cover about everything?

Thanks again.

Yes, you do have RCD protection, so that is alright.

It's alright for the shower circuit, but the lighting circuits don't have RCD protection.

701.411.3.3 is not met (and 411.3.1.2 might not be either) therefore the 701.415.2 exemption cannot apply so supplementary bonding must be installed.

But whoever put this in won't have read the Wiring Regs. Let's face it, the Noddy Book of Batteries and Bulbs would be a bit advanced.

The 6mm. Cable is alright if it does not run through thermal insulation or conduit.

Supplementary bonding may not be required.
It's not a matter of yes or no. It depends.

Can you find out what spotlights have been installed? Is there any stickers/information on them? They may/may not be double insulated amongst other potential issues depending what ones they have installed.

I had a look at the spotlights and they definitely don't require and earth so must be double insulated. They have two electrical connections, live and neutral.

That does not mean they do not require an earth, merely that a terminal for earth has not been provided. Unless they have the square-within-a-square symbol they need to be earthed. All cables must be provided with an earth wire anyway.

Thanks. I will verify they have the double insulated symbol.

I've just been in touch with them and they've told me the bulk of the wiring is original wiring from the original house builder. They've just taken 4 cables from it for the spot lights.

They've also said that the cat 5 cable is perfectly good for LED lighting and they've done this in lots of installations without issue.

He's told me the cabling for the shower is 10mm. I'm not sure. Diameter of the live seemed around 0.5 cm including the brown insulation.

So 10mm refers to the overall width of the 'flat' outer insulation? If so then I think we're good on that front.

Got you. Looked at that table again properly and it makes sense. I'll have a look at the cable again.
