    If the school your working at , comes under the local council then join Unison
    the union for local government employees. I worked as a school caretaker years ago and our local authority had to supply all PPE as needed. Whether it was gloves for cleaning the rat infested toilets out with or white bib and braces for painting the hall. It's a commitment they can't shirk from.
    You shouldn't have to provide reasons why you need the stuff, they should provide it automatically. If they don't supply PPE then refuse to do the tasks that require it. Sod school budgets. The school I worked at ran out of the, yearly, maintenance budget within 6 months, just replacing windows the pupils broke.
    One pupils parents came up seeking compensation for an "accident" little Tommy had sustained on school premises. I had watched the little so and so punch his fist through a glass window, yet he claimed the window was broken and had just brushed past it, when he cut himself rather badly.
    CCTV proved the case against him (fortunately for the school. else they would have just paid out).
    I can't believe that schools these days are asking support staff to provide or at least justify the need for PPE, when it's clearly the school's responsibility to provide it.

    EDIT,,,,,, It sounds like your employed by one of the "Loony Left " councils who seek to justify everything through it's social inclusion officers (no doubt on treble your wage) They will seek to prove , you need these items to fulfill your employment requirements (to the appropriate standards). Next week, you'll be visited by the "Diversity Officer" asking if your gay. lesbian or "other" And will be asked to justify your reasons for either being "Gay. Lesbian , or other. Don't tell them you'd rather not answer such questions, else you'll find yourself down the council offices in front of a social equalities review board, before you can say Bob's your Auntie. ;) ;) ;) ;)

    Just give them a list of jobs, from your Job Description, that require PPE, and the PPE that is required.
    If they refuse your requests, discuss with a Union Rep, and ask them to change your Job Description.
    Remember, anyone can represent anyone else in the workplace. You don't need to belong to any union, and your representative does not need to be a union rep.
    Often Union Rep's will support you, if you have a genuine case, whether you are in the union or not.

    A lot of schools now have an administrative manager who runs the school budget. Their sole goal is to reduce the maintenance/running expenditure.

    You just have to make your arguments, then if they refuse you PPE, ask for a copy of the formal Greivance Procedure and refuse the tasks until PPE arrives. Ensure that you submit a Greivance. Your employer/manager will not discipline you until the greivance has been resolved. It would look like spiteful recrimination.
    Or if your personal motivation will not allow you to refuse to do the tasks, and you've done the previous approach, buy your own PPE and submit the invoice for reimbursement. That way you choose your own PPE and take time out to purchase it.

    iirc dont plumbers have to have certain jabs?hep b/hep c because they deal with sewage?will you also not have to have the jabs to make sure you stay safe??

    as you are paye,im also assuming they will have to supply all tools/euipment for you to carry out the said tasks of your contract,unless you will be supplying your own?

    also will they have to supply you with a tower scaffold of some sort for you to carry out repairs to the curtains/tracks ?.

    As you work in a school who paid for your CRB investigation?

    And Gregers is quite right. We work on a lot of sewage pumps and had to have various inoculations, all paid for by the company.

    The manager is not playing with you. They're doing their job by trying to reduce expenditure, and trying to get you to do their job by aligning the list of required PPE to the tasks listed in the job description.
    To be fair to the manager, you're more expert in the PPE requirement than they are, probably. Although they may not agree.

    So just get on with it. Sit down and do the work that the manager should have done when they drew up the JD.
    Consider this as part of your duties. i.e. in order to carry out the JD properly and safely, there are tasks that are not listed in the JD.
    It wouldn't be the first JD that was incomplete.
    A JD is a guide to what might be expected of you. It won't list everything, e.g. it won't say you must carry out these tasks safely, or construct safe working platforms, or undertake training in such tasks, or carry out risk assesments before undertaking the tasks.

    Finally, Invite them to see you in action, as it were, then ask them what PPE they would reuire to do the job.

    You've certainly got off to a great start in your new job haven't you?

    First off, are you 'employed' or 'self-employed'? And if employed, WHO employs you?

    Secondly, (if employed), what does your contract of employment state in terms of PPE and/or Health & Safety?

    Third, whilst you're reading the link provided by Prentice, have a look at the H&S at Work Act 1974 - http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1974/37/contents The act outlines an employers and an employees health and safety responsibilities. Basically an employer is responsible for your health and safety whilst you carry out duties outlined by your employer. An employee also has the responsibility of ensuring their own health and safety by carrying out duties in a responsible manner. The act goes further by outlining that an 'employer' must ensure that 'persons not in his employment who may be affected are not thereby exposed to risks to their health or safety'.

    However, I suspect we are not being made aware of all of the fact here.

    As to your statements:

    How very juvenile! Are you actually employed at the school or just attending it?
