Hi all,

Newbie here, so please be gentle!

We are doing a new build, and architect has specced up type 1.1 wall (1840kg/m3 215mm block laid flat, then 10kg/m2 13mm plaster both sides).

We've done the blockwork but now wanted to finish with 15mm plasterboard both sides dot/dab. Density on the board is 10.2kg/m2, and there would be an average of 15mm gap each side. Key reason to do this relates to pipework/electrics which we don't want to then chase in etc.

Has anyone tried something like this before? Main worry is sound testing. No idea if the air gap helps or hinders. Part of me wants to make one side 15mm gap, and other side 20mm gap!

Thanks,
Nathan

Built properly a 1.1 wall will do the job but it must be built to a good standard - full joints with no voids. Probably the most important parts are the junctions with other walls and floors. Pay attention to the details and make sure they are right. We always render solid walls with 18mm sand:cement before dot and dab with 15mm soundcheck board. A tad more cost but much less than remedial if the wall fails. Also, avoid electrical boxes on the party wall but if you must have them make sure you use an appropriate method for sound attenuation.

Thanks for the tips John - will speak to the lads about getting some screed on - for the cost it's not worth the risk!

Tony - this is for a separating wall on a small block of flats.
