im just after some advice before i go ahead with a powerflush.

i have 15 rads that need flushing. the quote has come in at around £400 which sounds sensible to me for a days work 2 men but is a lot cheaper than any other quote ive had. i think BG would be charging around £1500 for 15 rads. other quotes have come in around £1000 which sounds very excessive.

Am I foolish to go with this company? They have a great website, i have trawled the web for any complaints against them and cant find anything. Ive spoken to the guy and he seems fine and says hes cheap because all the others are inflating prices way too high and he is being sensible.

Details of the quote are:
As you are probably aware; your area has 'above average' hard water, which invokes sludge and scale: so please note that your system could take around 6 hours (for two engineers) to be flushed to the BS 7953 Standard. Ourprocess also includes cleaning both sides of your heat exchanger and the diverter valve in your combi.

Im told by someone else that 15 rads is a full days work so is 6 hours sounding too rushed? He said he would do all the rads but would focus on the downstairs ones as they tend to be worst affected, which is true as they are the ones with worse cold spots.

I wont name the company - unless someone wants to know as they have had a bad experience and it might be the same company!

i would normally allow half a day for two for power flushing on a average three or four bed house which would normally have between eight and nine rads labour and new fernox etc isnt that cheap would of said between 500 and 1000 was about right but 400 does sound cheap but they could be short of work some is better than none if you know what i mean

My quotes are based on: £200 for setup, chemicals and clean up plus £30 per radiator. This is my own guideline for quote on phone, it can work out a bit more or a bit less depending on circumstances. Job price seems to work out about average. I don't see how 2 guys can do it significantly quicker than 1.
To get the full pressure and flow, you can only do 1 rad at a time.

powerflushing is usually a one man job unless rads are flushed by hand. British gas will give one man 8 hours to flush a problem system, once done they will guarentee the system for 12 months, replacing any rads with pin holes or faulty valves, and also install a magna clean which protects the system from then on. expect 800 to 1000 pounds.

pretty much all wrong.

The guys price is an honest one for what in reality is a simple job.
Others prices tend to be based on what BG charge and then drop it a bit so people think they are getting a good deal when in fact they are still paying way over the odds.
One of the biggest cons out there with people thinking its the be all and a lot of them are done unnecessary .

Bg work on a fixed price of 695(? may be 100 over) inc vat including a magnaclean with a lifetime guarantee while you maintain a contract of some sort. Your replacement dhw hx would be an extra cost though.

I do regular powerflushes and tend to quote in the region of 300 - 400 for a standard house.

All my equipment is paid for, the chemicals are in the region of £40, no more.

Its a full days job if done right, also depending on the amount of debris that needs clearing. I once spent 2.5 hours clearing one rad. Some are really quick.

I get most of my work thanks to BG who quote in the region of 700 - 800. I can half their price straight away.

Its a one man job, no need for two.

£1000 seems excessive. I used to charge by the rad and have a set up fee, but I found I was getting very little work, so dropped it to 300 for a basic house size, got more work and the cowboys couldn't really under cut.

I suppose it also depends where you live, I am in South Yorkshire where the average income is lower than normal, I suppose down south will command higher prices.

I have always said with BG you are paying 2 people, BG and the engineer. Good luck and do not be put off with a low price, its a steady simple day for a plumber asumming there are no issues. I love them!

you would of course reflush for free if it needed it several years down the line?

Its not free if you pay twice the price.

most aren't paying twice the price. some of the BG prices being bandied around this thread are incorrect. its still free however many times it needs doing in the systems lifetime.

BG offer a first class Powerflush and ive never heard any complaints outwith the price, in my experience ive saw many a joke of a Flush being performed by "THE LOCAL PLUMBER" meaning that the customer ends up paying BG to do the flush correctly. Fair enough the quotes from BG may be a few hundred quid more expensive but that does come with a lifetime guarantee.
