What jobs would you love to do?... Education Minister - one for you swidders? Be nice to see someone make a difference. I'm joking about the Ed Min thing obviously but you make a very valid argument swidders. It's not like me to agree with people and yet I've done it twice tonight... Medication must be wearing off!

Well, I read today that the BBFC film censors are worried about a new rule that they only need to have one person watching each film instead of the former rule of two. Why are they worried? Well, they don't just certify the Hollywood blockbusters, they also certify films of a more artistic genre. Do you see where I'm going with this?

There are people, in this country, who are paid, yes PAID, to spend all day watching bongo films.

That may not be my absolute favourite job, but it would certainly make the top 10.

I know what you mean about teaching styles etc blas..I teach painting and decorating in a college and even the style of teaching here is totally different to what it was when I attended all those years ago..

But as I said sometimes you have to be honest with yourself..'better to have tried and failed' blah de blah...very true but possibly just as bad as failing and thinking to yourself 'I told you you couldnt do it' on top of the downer for failing

Not ever likely to be competent in some students cases!!! Not a criticism of them - different brains work in different ways.

Mmmm? Wassat? Sorry, I got up at 6 today, bit tired, up a whole hour already.

There are students and there are students. When I was a student I couldn't stand the people who'd watched a few too many episodes of "The Young Ones" and decided that was exactly what being a student is like.

I have a lot of respect for the people who worked hard and earned every single bit of their degrees. Those who stayed late when a project had to be done rather than doing a "best effort" in the time available so they could still go down the pub.

My mum did her degree in her 40s as an Open University course whilst working and being a mum, and my girlfriend earned her degree through a company-sponsored apprenticeship. That was working for the company 3 days a week, working at uni 2 days a week, completing her assignments in evenings and weekends. I'd say those are difficult ways to earn a degree, but if you've got the determination to do it, and your family and friends are willing to support you then it's the most respected way.

Personally, I don't think I could cope with it!!!

I was curious about students (16+ ) today since it seems to me that an increasing number get qualifications without having to do anywhere as much work as they used to, and get all uppity if you dare suggest they ought to increase their work output.

Its strange..A lot of people slag todays youth..but there are some very clever and good kids out there..

The trouble is, as far as the building trade is concerned we are now getting kids who no-noe wants..either that or the wronguns in general..

I have seen a massive decline in the overall quality of trainees entering the industry just in the last ten years alone..most who enter the trade now would have lasted five minutes 30 years ago

Everything would have 'dun their ed in'...

Back then we didnt have call centres paying good money, MacDonalds, B&Q etc...kids can get a really good wage in those places...certainly better than the 50-60's quid a week some employers..especially kids on local council schemes are paying...crap money, I was on that 30 years ago!

Theres no incentive for brighter kids to come into the industry..ok yeh, in a few years once quallified they could be earning 6/700 a week easy..while their mates in Mackie D's are still on the NMW..but its pointless using that arguement to most teenagers who dont plan that far ahead...in fact some only plan for the next couple of hours!!

Zampa - I agree there are a lot of very, very bright students today. It's just this aspiration thing.

We spend so much effort boosting their egos without emphasizing that there's a price to pay. Well motivated students have always, and will always be fine.

The middle and less academically able either seem to have too much given to them on a plate and given higher qualifications than they actually warrant, which leads them into a false sense of security; or alternatively overlooked in schools (who only really care about league tables since that's what they get judged by), and are provided with an inflexible curriculum which is ill-designed or their needs and disaffects them completely. In these cases they get in the very dangerous habit of giving up, arguing the toss about even the most basic of common courtesies and blaming everyone else. This habit sticks with them for years.
