Inspection chamber cover

Hi all,

Just a quick question and sorry if it's a silly one. If my neighbour has a problem with his drains and calls out a private company to unblock them, is it acceptable for that company to access my garden without my permission while I am out at work and lift my inspection chamber cover? I arrived home on Friday to find my inspection chamber cover disturbed and not replaced properly, and surrounding plants in my garden trampled. My other neighbours tell me that my nextdoor neighbour was having work done on his inspection chamber so I assume whoever he called has done this. I'm annoyed as previously the cover fitted well but now it's wobbling in the hole as it's been put back the wrong way round.

The obvious answer is to turn it round then!

However even that is odd, because all the covers I have ever seen fit either way round!

It sounds as if you are on a shared drainage system and to sort out the problem access was needed to yours as well.

Whilst technically it might have been trespass, most people would say that you are being totally unreasonable to expect they would have had the plumber round a second time when you were home at considerable extra cost.

In all probability the cost should have also been shared but you are probably the unhelpful type who would refuse to pay your share!

Obviously you are the unfriendly type who does not know or speak to your neighbours and prefer to post on here to complain about them!

Why dont you have a nice chat with your neighbours, and thank them for sorting the problem out,and checking that your drain was ok at the same time. then ask him to have a look at the drain cover, im sure he will sort it for you as he seems a very good neighbour

Lift the cover & clear the channel around the outside of the frame, simple really.
As Agile says, if it's a shared drain then any maintenance costs should be shared by all those who use it. So instead of complaining I suggest you nip to the shops & buy your nice neighbour a few cans to thank him for getting the problem sorted.

if he didn't want to share the cost i would have got a 24hour notice put on the problem then he would have to pay he's share.

Thanks for such a stunningly rude reply to an innocent question - the first and last time I will post on here. For your information, the reason I asked here before speaking to my neighbour was that I wanted to check my rights before being the "unfriendly" and "unreasonable" person that you have assumed me to be. I speak to my neighbour often and assume he would have talked to me if I needed to chip in for the cost, which I would have been happy to do as I earn three times what he does and he is a tenant whereas I am a freeholder, but I assume that as he has said nothing, there is no problem I need to share the cost of, hence why I wondered if it was okay for my inspection chamber to be lifted in an attempt to solve a problem that is clearly NOT on my property or he would have told me. I am a single woman and would have problem moving a heavy metal cover myself, hence why I just wanted to check whether it would be reasonable to ask the drain company to put it right before approaching my neighbour for the details - because I am actually a VERY reasonable person and don't want him to feel awkward about something that is not his fault.

The cover is rectangular and has been put back at a 90 degree angle so no, it doesn't fit.

Can't believe how rude people are here, I really can't. You obviously have a lot of anger in your life and may I suggest you vent it elsewhere as I was only asking a question and you didn't need to answer if you felt so strongly that there is something wrong with me. You know nothing about me and you really are rude.

I'll take my queries elsewhere in future and I'm sorry I thought I'd find friendly help here.

Trying to resolves issues with neighbours by having friendly chat and actually compromising is the best way.talking about "RIGHTS" and "LEGAL" standing hardly makes you sound like a reasonable person


dont worry as you are very frail ................ask the TENANT neighbour to clean out the grid which the chamber cover sits in and seat it down or alternatively he can get in touch with his landlord who can call the firm back who did the job in the first place

That does not surprise me for someone who wants to check their legal rights before lashing into your neighbour who most unfortunately is a " mere tenant on a very low wage" !

How would you feel if you were a tenant on a low wage and he was refering to you like that?

Have you even considered that it may have been his landlord who got the drains cleared?

I am quite amazed that you even said that, which only goes on to prove that my assessment of your attitude was correct!

Nevertheless, if you could bring yourself to speak nicely to the "mere tenant", I expect that he would be quite happy to reseat the cover for you.

Of course if you just start reading him your "rights" then I expect that he will walk away!
